transfer case noise
Hey I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 and I don't think the transfer case is stock because the shift pattern is backwards and the 4 wheel on the fly doesn't work anymore but when I am going 76 on the high way when you let off the gas it sounds like a grinding, banging noise coming from the transfer case. Does anyone have an idea as to what it could be

Universal joint or the tcase snap ring is loose. Check the fluid level. Just over one quart.

Pull the tail shaft housing off the Tcase, it's on the output shaft right next to the bearing.

Ok and do you know any reason why my shift pattern is backwards and why it wont shift into 4wheel drive while moving. because when we bought the truck the guy mention it was the right transfer case for the transmission but the wrong tcase for that year.
The shift pattern now as is
2H
4H
N
4L
'
How it should be
4L
N
2H
4H

It's just the 98+ xfer case vs the 97 and down case. Where is 4l?

You have a 97 and earlier t-case in there. No worries.
Not shifting is a problem though. Is the t-case engaging at all? Or is it just the front axle that isn't doing its job?

You just have an earlier year Tcase, that's fine.

it egages fine and the cad works perfectly the tcase is a beast in 4l and 4h but do you know what model number the case is?
I just have to be completely stopped before I can shift so since its an older year that makes sense why I can shift on the fly
