Tire and gear question
Today I came out of work and my tire was pretty close to flat (10 psi) so I would like to upgrade to a large tire sooner then I thought. Anyway I have 33's with a 6" lift the goal was to put a military tire on this truck 36" or 37" I know I need to re gear I was looking at 4.56 by motive and Richmond any thoughts on the two company's. second off I would like to try to do this on my own Richmond sells a DVD with manuals and of coarse I've spent way way to much time on google. Has anyone done a ring and pinion swap that has had limited experience? Third could I run the gears in the rear axel only for the time being and just not use 4x4 ? I know I can't run two seperate gears and try to use my 4x4 but with out engaging the 4x4 with the stock 3.55 would that hurt anything? Last does anyone in Ohio know where to buy military tires I've found numerous places out of state online but shipping is more then a tire! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

6" lift would look great with either 36" or 37" tires, but I'd go with 37s just because of the tire selection. Most 36s are Interco's and personally I don't like them on a primarily street rig as their treadlife is complete ****. With 37s you have BFG's, Toyo's, Coopers, Mickeys, etc which are far more mixed On/Offroad friendly. I would also go with 4.88s as they are for 37&38 tires, while 4.56s are for 35&36 (My opinion). My 4.88s are from Yukon, but I know of a few Jeepers who have Motive gears and have been happy with them. When I bought my truck it had 4.88s in the rear and stock 3.55s in the front, you'd be okay for the time being if you don't use your 4x4. I did my R&P upgrade with my dad and it can be difficult if you don't have knowledge about it, but we have guys on here who would be happy to help you with any problems during the process. Also, I don't have a clue about the military tires.

It isn't just the weight. Its also rolling resistance, and the leverage the larger tire puts on the various components that hold things in place. (ball joints, steering linkage, etc.) The D44 really isn't up to the task of tires larger than 35" on a truck that weighs close to 3 tons.......

Yeah you can just change the rear gears, pull the front driveshaft to be on the safe side until you change the front gears.
