According to this article the 2014 Ram 2500 gets coil springs. I am so excited. Could you imagine the flex the Power Wagon would have?

just traded in my 09 ram 1500 for a 13 3500 with leafs. Very happy to be rid of the coils !!

 

I have coils all the way around on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it. Solid axles and coils equals lots and lots of flex. The Power Wagon will be unstoppable now.

 

I can't imagine ever owning a HD truck with coils...Having gone from the 1500 to a 3500 (yes its still a step above 2500) The towing quality has a HUGE difference then that of a 1500. I felt too much bounce and sway hauling 9k lbs with my 1500, I could never imagine hauling 16klbs. I haul a lift on a gooseneck with my truck now, and that is close to 24klbs. That is sketchy sometimes even with my 1 ton, put a set of coils in, drop that weight by about 7k and I don't think I would feel any better. Yes I realize proper tires and bags help out, but still. I know the tech might be better, cause I know they tried it a LONG time ago on the pickups. However if the tech was soo much better, why has dodge been the only auto maker to put them in?

I will most whole heartedly agree on the ride quality tho. When I was in my 1500 I felt like I was riding in a car. While not under load is was perfect to drive, and awesome to ride in. But again when pulling, I would much prefer a set of leafs...

Now air ride, that could be something worth looking into. Although I might be little leery of the winter months here in alberta. Semis seem to go through bags like crazy, I know they carry MUCH more load, but if that's gonna happen on the pickups? Man...

 

compairind a 1500 to 1 3500? Kinda like apples to oranges. I drove a 2500 2 miles, felt like I was in conastoga wagon compared to my 1500. All me ford 1/2 ton ahd leafes, this ram with coils handles the load much better that the fords with leaves. I thi nk it may be thr torsion bar, love it!

 

Apples to oranges but even from my 06 1500 with leaf to 09 1500. loved the 06 suspension. As much as i love so many things about my old 09 the traction control and suspension were my 2 biggest complaints. mind you once i wired in a relay to drop out the fuse for all the abs and what not the traction control was no longer an issue so then i was down to just the coils.

 

I'd take leafs over coil springs any day. They just don't seem like they belong on the rear end of a heavy duty truck.

 

even if I were comparing a 1500 to a 2500 there is still a lot of difference in my mind...from a 2500 to a 3500 is hardly different in the actual truck itself. The only difference is they have an extra set of leafs in the back. Brakes, frame you name it is all the same. But yes it does make a difference in towing.

Fords IMO have always run super rough, no matter the size. I ran a 09 250 super at work for a year, pulling around a cargo trailer maxed out at 5200kg. We did long hauls, every week, and were talking like 2000kms in a week. By the end of the week my back was in agony, the thing rode so hard! BUT it pulled that trailer AMAZING. Every semi that passed, hardly moved that trailer, and vise versa. The thing was not even a diesel, it was the lousy 5.4. This is what Ford prides itself in, and they do a good job of it. However I think they lack in pretty much everything else. But there is nothing worse then getting passed by a semi pulling when your pulling a 30' trailer, and the semi pulling you in. It's a horrible feeling IMO.


I guess what I am trying to say is you have to find that happy medium. Would you want a truck that pulls a trailer amazing (Ford) but lacks in interior and everyday ride quality? Or a Ram that might not pull a trailer AS good as a Ford, but has a ride you can actually handle, A good body style and interior. Plus a diesel that has the best reliability? (ALL JUST MY OPTION)

Same goes for ride quality! Do you want a truck your going to be pulling with 3/4 of the time to have a good ride quality? Or are you gonna want a truck thats going to pull and you not have to worry about a thing? Your already sacrificing ride quality by hooking up to a trailer.

For MOST people going to a 2500 or a 3500 means they are going to be doing some pulling, in MOST cases you are not worried about ride quality (to a point), you just want that thing to pull. Again if coils are soo much better to pull on, why are so many heavy duty pullers on leafs or air? This is why I try and stress the fact that for those people who don't pull too much per year and don't need the weight capacity of a 2500 just to stay with a 1500. Even if you are only pulling 5k a year at pretty near your max, its still better to do that with a 1500. Not only are you saving $$$, but your getting a better ride for the other part of the year you're not pulling!

Bottom line IMO is coils are good for the ride, but hook a trailer up and they go for no good...

I drove tractor trailer 14 yrs, so its not like i never hauled a load or only have riden around in a car with a truck body. If i wanted that i would of owned a chevy ll these yrs. but what i m saying is i've owned f150 fords till 08, all with leaf springs and this 2012 ram with oils and i think even more importnt the torsion bar hich distributes excess weight while cormering fom the heavy side to the lighter side. This Ram hauls my boat far better than any leaf spring ford f150 i ever owned. Not only uprior power, better fuel mileage but also far more stable in the rear end.
