Severe Transmission Leak, even after front seal replaced.
Hey Everyone,
I am in need of some help.
1997 5.2L 1500. Tranny fluid dumps out of the bell housing when shifted into gear(Reverse). Dropped the transmission and replaced the front seal and also the pump to housing seal. The old front seal was destroyed, the spring had worked its way out from behind the lip of the seal and gotten mangled. Everything else looked good, any ideas as to what else could be leaking? It is huge leak, similar to pouring the fluid on the ground straight from the bottle.
I read somewhere that it could possibly leaking from the vent on the top of the pump... Is this a real possibility? Any way to check that? What would have to fail to cause this?
Help please! Thanks,
Nick

Did the spring score the toque converter 'snout' that the seal rides on? If there are any irregularities there, they will shred the seal in seconds, and you will have a nice leak.
I suspect you are going to get the opportunity to revisit dropping your trans...... Sorry 'bout that.

Thanks for replying so fast, and the welcome.
I did see some scoring on the shaft. So I guess I am in need of a new torque converter...
I was wondering why it would only leak when it is in gear, seems to me that it would leak while idling if it was coming from the front seal... am I wrong there?

Just a little tip for you and those installing seals with springs / "retainers". If you hit them hard enough they can lose there place as was the case with EncompassAuto. One way to avoid that when installing is to pack the hollow surroundings of the spring with Vaseline or trans lube. Either will do. That will keep that spring nice and snug. The Vaseline/trans lube will dissipate with the heat and will have no adverse effect on the trans.

J415, The spring that had come out was the retainer on the old seal. It is possible it came out when it was originally installed, who knows when that was, but I believe it likely came out somewhere down the road... pardon the pun.
Though that is still a great tip, Vaseline is great for seals in many ways... I used to be a Navy P-3 Mechanic and we used it for everything.
