On my 2000 Durango (5.9L), I've recently noticed steam coming from the heater/AC vents. This leads to fogging on the inside of the windshield, as well as the front door windows. I've also noticed a strong odor of coolant inside the cabin when driving. I've checked the floor carpet on the passenger side, underneath the dash for moisture (thinking that I have a leaking heater core). No evidence of moisture.

Smell is usually the # 1 kicker... The leaks can be very small but when its heated and blown the smell does get stronger, even if its tiny its going to need to be replaced. Another common show point is if equiped (rear vents that run through console) the leak will chase the vent tube. I opened mine up on the passenger side beneath the carpet on the transmission hump nearest the dash. On my 99 i have a stock drain that showed me on the firewall behind the engine more prominate. I looked for that particular vent tube on the firewall but could not find it. Maybe the 2000 Durango is not equipped with it? I did examine the heater hoses that go into the firewall (more towards the drivers side of the firewall) and there was no residue on the firewall.

 

I've actually got the same issue. I was just thinking it is a pinhole leak in the heater core. Can you clarify more on the actual problem Duranged?
