there should be a button under the column to release the lock....maybe try to take the lock out and then mess with it

if the car is parked on an incline, I'd say that the key is probably stuck due to there being pressure on the locking system. I don't remember what causes this but if you can manage to push the car forward so that the weight is taken off of the locking mechanism, the key should release. Also there could be a button that you need to press before you can turn the key all the way off and then release it like normal.

the car is parked on an even surface. i don't see a button under the column to release the lock. does it make a difference if it is a neon se as far as the release button.

Well first off, has this happened before? Is this your first time driving it, etc? If you've removed the key before then there isnt a button, which would be located 1/4" in front of the ignition...its kinda bananna shaped. Anyway, if this is the first ime my best would be you arent pushing the button in...when i got my Neon i had never had a car with an ignition key release before and it took me about 15minutes to get the damn key out. lol.

Just had the same exact issue ion my 02 Stratus R/T after trying to shift to and from park a bunch of times, parking on level ground ETC, I tilted the wheel up and down a few times then then all the way down and the key came out. So try titlting the wheel down.
